We strive to serve every Veteran who comes through our doors. Each Veteran has unique situations that require varying services. Below are some success stories and quotes from the Veterans we are privileged to serve.
Mr. Fernandito Torres is an Air Force Veteran who served as a Computer Systems Operations Supervisor from 1983-1988. On 28 January, 2019, he was referred to us from the VA Annex for assistance after he and his 85 year old mother, Frances, moved to Nashville from Youngstown, Ohio for warmer weather. After staying in costly extended stay hotels for 6 weeks, Mr. Torres found a home for himself and his Mother but needed financial assistance to secure the location. Operation Stand Down Tennessee was able to provide a rental deposit and furniture for four rooms from our own 12th Ave Thrift Store. Sean Hager, Victoria Grazioso and the Thrift Store Team provided two night stands, a dresser, a coffee table, two end tables, a couch and a chair, a dining room table and four chairs, a bookshelf, and four lamps.
Mr. Torres was beyond grateful for the assistance he received from us and Building Lives Foundation. As the sole caretaker Frances, they are financially secure in their day-to-day needs but just needed a little hand up to get established in Music City.
Ms.Stacey Shields first came into the office for services in January of 2017. She was in danger of having her electricity turned off because she could not afford to pay the bill. She was also in need of employment as she had just been released from employment due to excessive absences; her 2 year daughter was sick and was in and out of the hospital. Ms. Shields was in the midst of a divorce and wasn’t receiving any financial assistance from her soon to be ex-husband. Ms. Shields’ daughter was also diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and would need extensive care as well as physical therapy. Ms. Shields was struggling with the stress of the situation and needed a support system that could walk with her through the obstacles in her path. Through multiple programs,OSDTN was able to assist Ms. Shields and provide housing assistance. This was huge because it meant Ms. Shields no longer had to worry about whether she would be able to meet her rent on a monthly basis. This took the load off of the Veteran shoulders and allowed her the time to focus on the well-being of daughter who was now wearing braces to walk. The Veteran eventually went back to school through the Vocational Rehabilitation Program which brought in another source of income for her household. Ms. Shields has periodically come into the office to report on her progress and has secured a great job and is soon to be married again. Ms. Shields has beaten the odds of her situation and has the glow of happiness on her face when she speaks about her life.
“I worked with Operation Stand Down Clarksville. Mrs. Theresa Carter and Mr. Frank Ketcham were absolutely amazing. I was jobless and homeless. I didn’t know what I was going to do. I just couldn’t catch a break until they both came along. Mr. Frank helped me obtain a great job by providing help creating a resume and interview prep. He was always there when I had any questions or concerns. Mrs.Theresa helped me find housing and really went above and beyond to make sure that I was stably housed and end my homeless status. Both individuals created an atmosphere that was welcoming and trusting throughout my whole experience. I really appreciate all that they have done. Thank you.” – Ashley P.
